Mini Spaghetti Pies

Trim the crusts from the bread and butter one side of each with butter.
Push the bread slices, buttered side down into 12 muffin tins.
Bake at 180ºC for 15 minutes until crispy.
At this stage the cases can be cooled and kept in an airtight container.
Fill the cases evenly with a spoonful of Spaghetti or Baked Beans.
Top each with equal quantities of grated cheese and chopped bacon if using.
Bake at 180º for 15 minutes until the cheese has melted, the bacon crispy and filling hot.

Note: Cool before serving to children.

About Bassett's Jelly Babies
Jelly babies are a type of soft confectionery that look like little babies in a variety of colours. They are very popular in the United Kingdom. There are currently several companies that make jelly babies, most predominantly Trebor Bassett and Rowntree.

Jelly Babies were launched by Bassett's in 1919 in Sheffield as "Peace Babies" to mark the end of World War II due to wartime shortages and the fact that the name had largely become ironic. In 1953 the product was relaunched as "Jelly Babies".

In March 1989 Bassett's were taken over by Cadbury Schweppes, who had earlier acquired the Trebor brand.

Jelly Babies manufactured in the United Kingdom tend to be dusted in starch.

Each Bassett's Jelly Baby now has an individual name and shape, colour and flavour: Brilliant (red - strawberry), Bubbles (yellow - lemon), Baby Bonny (pink - raspberry), Boofuls (green - lime), Bigheart (purple - blackcurrant) and Bumper (orange). The introduction of different shapes and names was a new innovation, circa 1989, prior to which all colours of jelly baby were a uniform shape.

Jelly Babies are similar in appearance to Gummi Bears, which are better known outside of the United Kingdom. Though the texture is different, Jelly Babies having a harder outer "crust" and a softer, less rubbery, centre.

In 2007, Bassett's Jelly Babies changed to include only natural colours and ingredients.

Prepare & Use

1 Empty contents into a large 8 pt saucepan. Add 3/4 pint of water using the measure mark on the side of the can. 2 Stir in 4lbs of sugar. Bring to boil, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon. 3 Reduce heat, maintain boil for further 15 mins, stir occasionally. Add a knob of butter during boiling to disperse foam. 4 Test for setting-remove from heat, put 1/2 teaspoon of marmalade onto cold saucer and put in cool place. Test after 2 minutes by drawing a finger over surface. If it wrinkles, setting point has been reached. If not reboil for a few minutes. Test again. 5 Stand for further 2-3 minutes before pouring into warmed jars. If peel floats, stir contents of each jar. 6 Cover each jar with screw cap, parchment or film..

Marmite Eggs Florentine

Ingredients For 4 people (Vegetarian) 675gm frozen chopped spinach 4 medium free range eggs 1 tablespoon Marmite 4 slices freshly cooked toast freshly ground black pepper

Recipe Warm the spinach in a microwave and drain in a sieve squeezing out as much water as possible. Heat 1" deep of water in a frying pan and poach the eggs for 3-4 minutes. Beat the Marmite into the drained spinach and then pile it on to the toast, making a small well in the centre of the spinach. Place a poached egg in each well and season with pepper.

The raw ingredients existed - Marmite is made from brewer's yeast that's been used to ferment sugars into alcohol - but Marmite was yet to be invented.

People simply binned the by-products of brewing before they knew any better.

When German scientist, Liebig discovered that brewer's yeast cells could be concentrated, bottled and eaten, Marmite was as close to being invented as it's possible to be, without actually having being invented...

It was in 1902 that the Marmite Food Company (later Marmite Ltd) was set up in Burton on Trent. Our mission, then as now, was to share the joy of Marmite-eating and make it available to all those with excellent taste.

It took a while to get the machinery and manufacturing process right, but soon enough we started producing great quantities of the spread you know and love today. (Cue widespread celebration and dancing in the streets!)

Basil French Toast with Marmite, Mozzarella & Tomato

Ingredients For 2 people 4 slices firm rustic bread Level tablespoon of freshly chopped basil leaves 150g mozzarella cut into 4 slices Marmite for spreading 1 large tomato sliced into 4 1 medium free-range egg 50ml milk 2 tablespoons olive oil Freshly ground black pepper

Recipe In a shallow bowl mix together the egg, milk, chopped basil and pepper.Spread the Marmite over two of the slices then dip all the slices of bread into the mixture until well soaked and transfer to a large plate. Then add the mozzarella and finally the slices of tomato to the Marmite slices. Season well with fresh pepper and then sandwich together the remaining slices of bread gently pressing together to seal the sandwiches. Heat half the olive oil on a griddle or in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the sandwiches over a low heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden, adding the remaining oil when cooking the second side. Check that the bread has cooked through and is not soggy inside and then drain on kitchen paper to remove any excess oil. Serve immediately on warmed breakfast plates.

Schweppes Bitter Lemon mini Bottle

Schweppes Bitter Lemon The combination of refreshing lemon taste and bitter quinine make Schweppes Bitter Lemon a drinking experience like no other. Many other cocktails also use Schweppes Bitter Lemon for that certain refreshment. Quinine was first used in the British India as a preventive measure against malaria. As a consequence, Schweppes Indian Tonic was born in 1870’s, and Bitter Lemon later in 1950’s. The amount of quinine in today’s Indian Tonic or Bitter Lemon is too small to have any medicinal effect. The basic production method has changed little since Marmite was first invented. Basically, the used brewer's yeast is broken down to release soluble amino acids and proteins. This soluble material is then concentrated and filtered a few times before going through a unique (and top secret) process for flavour development.

At the end of all this, we end up with yeast extract paste - nearly Marmite but not quite. The finishing touches make all the difference. We add an extra blend of vitamins, vegetable and spice extracts to create the taste your mouth adores!

Marmite Baked Beans with Tomato & Sage

Ingredients For two people (Vegetarian) 1 tsp Marmite 250g cooked cannellini beans, drained 2 shallots chopped 8 large or 12 small cherry tomatoes quartered 3 sage leaves 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil freshly ground black pepper basil leaves and extra virgin olive oil to serve

Recipe Pre-heat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mk 6. Put the prepared beans, shallots, tomatoes and sage leaves in a roasting tin with the olive oil and Marmite and toss gently to combine well. Season with pepper and bake in the oven stirring occasionally for 20 - 30 minutes or until the tomatoes are hot and bubbling and the shallots are beginning to brown. Serve on good hot ciabatta bread drizzled with extra virgin olive oil, and garnished with fresh basil leaves.
